Formed in 1998, Tokyo, UNU, a Tokyo/Paris-based VJ team composed of 4 members: Yoshiaki Nakaichi (leader), Shinichiro Sugiyama, Takashi Arimura and Christophe Decouland-Courmaud, has been working extensively with various events and large-scale outdoor festivals, collaborating with numerous top DJs. Having participated in development projects of the VJ software, "Motiondive.tokyo", and Roland’s visual synthesizer "CG-8", as well as having engaged in diverse directional approaches, based on the use of Lasergraph "DSP" and a massive number of audio/visual tracks collected over many years at its resident event, “TROUBLE✩HOUSE”, UNU is expanding its portfolio of successful VJ work through interactive communication between software and hardware fields. In 2007, Japan’s first holographic video, which UNU designed for Genki Rochets at “Live Earth”, attracted much attention.
UNU went on a European tour in 2005. Soon afterward, they began receiving offers internationally from European and Asian countries and, in 2006, made the top 20 on DJ Mag’s World VJ Ranking. In December the same year, they performed VJ play and exhibition concurrently at Elysees Biarritz, Paris. In 2007, they played VJ, using a 25 m-long LED, at “Zouk Out”, one of the largest club festivals in Asia.
Along with their VJ work, UNU has been active in creating video works. In 2006, they participated in the creation of “Neon Genesis Evangelion Remix DVD” and were selected as one of the top 100 creators by the “Japanese Motion Graphic Creators 2007”, an annual published in Japan. In addition to this, they presented their video works for Cinefeel's “Made in Japan” film screening and exhibition (2003, France), ITV’s “Mixmasters” (2004, UK) and "OPTORONICA" (2005, UK). The visual expression created making full use of VFX by Nakaichi, who has done the post-production work on many films including “Godzilla” and “Battle Royale”, has gained significant recognition both domestically and internationally.
